The ABC’s of Diabetes

If you have diabetes you may be at risk of developing cardiovascular disease and other complications.  Knowing the “ABC’s of diabetes,” including A1c, blood pressure, and cholesterol can help you ensure you keep your heart healthy.  A1c is a measure of blood glucose control over the previous 2-3 months and should be checked at least twice a year.  For most people with diabetes, the target A1c is less than 7%.  You should get your blood pressure checked at every doctor’s appointment.  Many people with diabetes have a target blood pressure of less than 140/90 mmHg.  Lastly, those with diabetes should have a full cholesterol panel measured at least once a year.  Talk to your doctor about what levels are appropriate for you!
