Recognizing the Signs and Symptoms of Heart Attack in Women

A heart attack is an obstruction of a coronary artery that results in the death of heart muscle.  Common signs and symptoms of a heart attack include chest pain or discomfort, shortness of breath, nausea, and sweating.  However, in women heart attacks are likely to present with atypical symptoms, such as pressure or pain in the lower chest or upper abdomen, dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, upper back pressure, or extreme fatigue.  It is important for women to be aware of these signs and to call 911 right away if they even suspect that they are having a heart attack.
